Facebook has the gravity

Facebook have added 23 million new users in the last month to bring their audience to almost 375 million users. This grand total isn’t comprised of people who merely sign up for an account and never come back. This number represents the amount of people who visit Facebook at least once per month. It appears that Facebook has reached critical mass and is finally getting traction in regions where competing social networks got to market first. Brazil and Europe both have solid competitors due to language barriers and the sheer size of their populations. It seems that Facebook’s translations application has served them well as they continue to go from strength to strength.

Don’t mess with Wikipedia

Here’s a great example of what not to do in social media. The agent (or most likely soon-to-be ex-agent) of a controversial Australian television personality decided to simply delete part of her Wikipedia page. In the old world, this would be a perfectly acceptable course of action. There’s something that will negatively impact my client so I’ll remove it. Simple? Not any more though. There’s no better way to antagonise a situation than to delete content that multiple people have volunteered their time to develop. Every single person and company has the potential to be reviewed, especially if you’re a public figure. You can’t fight the momentum, it’s just too big. When you are charged with protecting a clients’ reputation in the blogosphere and other social media avenues, you can’t afford to do anything that will draw attention or cause a flare up.
